Remove a Broken Key from a Lock ๐Ÿ”‘

EasyKeys.com can’t solve all your problems – like a sore back or a dripping faucet, but we can help with a few others! One of which is a broken key stuck inside of a lock core. Keys can break in lock cores for several reasons including becoming old and frail, the lock is gummed up, or if the user is the Hulk and turns too hard.

The solution is the broken key extractor tool. A broken key extractor fits into the lock core and essentially grabs the broken piece of the key. When the broken key extractor is pulled from the lock core, it also removes the piece of the key, leaving the lock usable. There are multiple types of broken key extractors available. To find the correct option for you, see below.

If there is space around the cut side of the broken key:

Pick the Saw Blade Style.

The saw blade works by gripping the cuts of the key. Insert the extractor with the saw blade facing the side of the cut key. Apply a little pressure onto the cut side of the key while pulling the extractor out of the core.

If there is no space around the cut side of the broken key:

Pick the Spiral Style.

While inserting the extractor on either side of the key, twist or spin the extractor to the right. Continue twisting while pulling the extractor out of the core.

Another available option is the Hook Style.

This extractor has a small hook on the end and is made of steel.

EasyKeys.com also offers an interchangeable extractor set which covers it all! The HPC Interchangeable Extractor Set is the most popular on the market. It is compact, which allows you to carry a variety of extractors inside one tiny set. The set includes 4 extractor blades (1 saw blade, 3 spiral blades of various sizes) stored inside a hollow handle. Replacement blades are also available if you happen to misplace one.

A magnifying card light is a helpful tool to use for the broken key extraction. This slim tool can light and magnify the lock core, making it easier to see the necessary details. This is also great for seeing small lock codes, or even seeing a menu in a dark restaurant! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Feeling Stuck or in a Jam?

Feeling stuck or in a jam? EasyKeys can smooth your operation!

It is common for dust and dirt to build up inside the keyway. This causes the pins or wafers within the core to stick. As a result, the key will not turn. In some cases, original keys develop a wear pattern within the core. Since our keys are brand new and haven’t had the chance to be worn in with the lock, they can be a bit rigid, and lubricant typically does the trick. Just spray the lubricant in the lock, move the key back and forth a few times, and you should be all set!

If you have a particularly stubborn key, just email a photo of the key we sent and the face of the lock core to info@easykeys.com. One of our experts will figure out exactly what is going on and provide a solution.

Find the perfect lubricant for your locks here

We recommend you clean and lubricate the cylinder and the locking mechanism regularly with a graphite lock lubricant or a light spray, such as WD-40 high-performance penetrant. This is especially important when using newly cut keys in your lock.

Easily Add Variety with Haworth!

Did you know that several Haworth lock cores are interchangeable?

The Haworth SL, ML, and HW series can all be interchanged! Changing lock cores can make it easy to streamline lock numbers / keys as well as increasing security by exchanging lock codes. In order to change lock cores, a control key is necessary. Haworth has three control keys available: CK-1, CK-2, and CK-3. CK-1 is used for the SL001-SL300 series as well as the ML001-ML300 series. The rest of the ML series, ML401-ML700, requires CK-2, and the HW series (HW001-HW300) requires the CK-3. Another helpful key is the Master Key. A master key locks and unlocks every key within a specific manufacturer and series (if available). While there is no master key for the SL series, there are master keys available for the ML and HW series.

We are now offering a discounted special on the SL series lock cores!

The SL series lock cores are just $4.87 each and come in chrome and black finishes.
